Health Care Providers With PALS Certification Can Help To Save Critically Ill Infants

The American Heart Association runs a number of courses for PALS. These are short term courses, that train a provider of pediatric health care to develop the skills and acquire the knowledge needed to manage infants who are critically ill. This allows the PALS trained person to stabilize the infant and transport him or her to the hospital where care that is more critical can be provided.

PALS or pediatric advanced life support trains qualified persons to recognize the risk of heart arrests in infants and give them the skills to treat the infants in an emergency. These persons must have current registration in their respective professions. The PALS training involves management of respiratory systems and other heart related resuscitation processes. Trained person who undertake these PALS courses are given an overview of assessment, and skills to recognize and mange shock, respiratory distress and its failure, understanding unnatural cardiac rhythms and preventing cardiac arrest. Knowledge of CPR procedures is a must and requires a certain degree of proficiency to be attained in this skill. They are also made familiar with the pharmacology involved in these treatments and support systems. It is also necessary for persons who have obtained such PALS certification to undergo refresher courses every two years after which this PALS certification is then renewed.

Such training of PALS is imparted to health care personnel like physicians, nurses and other paramedics, who are normally associated with pediatric patients. Such training can even be obtained online and skills can be tested through stimulation offered on campuses recognized by the American heart association. Once the skills are tested and found to be of acceptable standards, the person is given a PALS certification card. This form of training is considered a part of continuing professional education that is a must for practitioners in the field of medicine. It is also possible to undergo further training that can allow the qualified person to become an instructor for such PALS training. These skills need to be constantly upgraded and the instructor must also have given instructions to a minimum number of people over a period of two years.
